The Evil Eye, Muslims, and Protection
Many Muslims don’t know about the evil eye protection dua. However, it is real and a factor that influences many peoples’ lives. If a person looks at another with envy or jealousy, wishing he had something that the other person has, it can cause the evil eye. Moreover, even if a person sees something which pleases him but he holds some deep-seated desire for it, the evil eye can take effect. Therefore, we must always be careful — both of being afflicting by and afflicting the evil eye. This is something we should always take seriously, understanding its importance and potential for harm.
For protection, the Prophet (PBUH) outlined a few methods. One of them is to recite various duas for protection that are a part of the sunnah. Duas against evil, in general, can also serve as protection from the evil eye. Furthermore, the Prophet (PBUH) told us about some cures for the evil eye. He stated that if a person is afflicted by the evil eye, the person who is responsible for that should perform wudu and save the wudu’s water. Then, someone can pour that water over the afflicted person and if Allah wills, that will enable the ill or sick person to recover.
Our beloved Prophet Muhammad’s (P.B.U.H) enemies used to give him an evil eye and thus he said: “The evil eye is real. If anything were to overtake the divine decree, it would be the evil eye”. [At-Tirmidhi].
One must engage in ruqyah (Quranic recitation and the words laid down by the Holy Prophet (PBUH)) and constant remembrance of Allah (SWT) (Dhikr). It is a fact that those who are close to Allah (SWT), who recite the Holy Quran and engage in daily Dhikr have a much lower probability of being afflicted by the evil eye and its harmful effects.
Steps to protect yourself from The Evil Eye
Recite Duaa
“Oh, Allah I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil He has created”.
(Sahih Muslim)
“I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from every devil, every poisonous reptile and every evil eye”.
(Sahih Bukhari)
2. Read the Quran
The Prophet of Allah (PBUH) said: “Satan runs away from the house in which Surah Al-Baqara is recited.”
(Sahih Muslim)
ii. Surah Falaq and Naas
“The Messenger of Allah used to seek refuge with Allah from the jinn and from the evil eye until the Mu’wadaitain (Surah Falaq and Surah Naas) were revealed, and whey they were revealed He started to recite them and not anything else.”
(Tirmidhi)
iii. Ayat al Kursi
Abu Hurairah reported: [A thief who was trying to steal the sadaqah] said: “When you go to bed, recite Ayatul Kursi for then a guardian from Allah will be appointed to watch over you, and Shaytan cannot approach you till dawn.”
When the Prophet ﷺ heard, he replied: “He told you the truth though he is a liar. He (the thief) was the Shaytan.”
iv. 4 Qul
Make it a habit to recite Surah al-Falaq, Surah An-Naas, and surah al-Ikhlaas in the morning and in the evening every single day. According to a hadith:
The Prophet said:
‘Qul Hoo wAllahu Ahad’ and ‘Muwaidaitain’ [al-Falaq and An-Naas] when you enter the evening and when you wake up in the morning three times and it will protect you from everything.”(Tirmidhi 3575)
Envy is a feeling of dismay with regard to the advantages of others, wishing that they may sustain heavy losses. “Many of the people of the Scripture wish they could turn you back to disbelief after you have believed, out of envy from themselves”, Allah says. [Qur’an 2:109]
Protection from envy can be ensured by:
- Protecting oneself by seeking refuge with Allah from the evil of envy.
- Observing “taqwa” (fear of Allah),
- Doing what He commanded, and refraining from committing that which He prohibited.
- Allah’s with the patient.
- Being patient with the envious person and treating him/her in a kind and fair manner.
- Putting one’s trust in Allah.
- Turning to Allah in repentance by not doing the sins that were the main reason why your enemies could harm you.
- Giving charity and doing acts of benevolence as much as one can.
Conclusion
To save a person from the evil that may try to access his/her shield, only Dhikr and duas we mentioned above can serve as a weapon for the one who believes. So, we should always Dhikr and use ruqyah, as mentioned by the beloved Prophet (PBUH), to protect us.
“And God said, ‘Oh humankind! Be dutiful to your Lord, who created you from a single person (Adam) and from Him (Adam) He created his wife (Eve), and from them both He created many men and women.” (Quran, A Nisa 4:1)
“And put your trust in Allah Alone, and enough is Allah as a Disposer of affairs.” (Quran, Ahzaab 33:3)
Hence, if we look at the Quran and Sunnah, we can see this topic discussed. We should take the guidance available in the Sunnah and utilize it in our everyday lives. There are many Quranic verses and duas that we can recite for protection from the evil eye.
