About Surah Waqia
Surah al-Waqiah is the 56th surah of the Quran. Al-Waqia means something that is inevitable, something that no one can stop from happening, or an event. When we read this surah, we know that it refers to life after death, which is indeed a reality. Thus, the name describes the surah perfectly.
This surah is the next one after Surah ar-Rahman in the Quran, which is the 55th. Surah ar-Rahman focuses on Allah’s blessings and the rewards of Paradise, while Surah Waqiah provides a contrast since it contains many verses about Hell and its punishments.
Surah Waqiah is in the 27th Juz of the Quran. It consists of 96 verses. That may appear to be a lot to someone, but the reality is that these verses are very short. In most copies of the Quran, Before Sleep read every night Surah Waqiah is just around three pages long. Therefore, you can memorize it with ease. If you learn half a page every day, then you can memorize this surah in just six days!
Allah revealed this surah during the Meccan era. This was the time when the Muslims were facing immense difficulties against the Quraish, before the migration to Madinah. Therefore, the descriptions of Hell served as a warning for the disbelievers, whereas the promise of Paradise was something that would raise the spirits of the believers in difficult times.
