Seven Duas for Good Health Derived from the Quran and Sunnah
Before learning some duas for good health derived from the Quran and Sunnah, every believer should know that this world is not his permanent abode. It is, rather, a testing place where trials and tribulations are sure to touch everyone. Allah informs us in the Quran: “And certainly, We shall test you with something of fear, hunger, loss of wealth, lives and fruits, but give glad tidings to the patient ones.” (Quran 2:155). A Muslim is expected to bear each unique trial with patience. Believers must rely upon Allah for due relief: “So verily, with the hardship, there is a relief.” (Quran 94:5)
An ailing Muslim should bear in mind that, if Allah had willed, sickness would not have stricken him. Seeing that, not a leaf falls without Allah’s knowledge and permission. Perhaps it is Allah’s will for him to be purified from sins. In which case, a believer’s heart feels at ease knowing that if he endures his test, it contains hidden blessings. The Prophet (PBUH) said: “Never a believer is stricken with a discomfort, hardship or illness, grief or even with mental worry that his sins are not expiated for him.” (Sahih Muslim 2573)
Sickness, worry, grief, etc. are all, therefore, a test of a believer’s level of faith. There is ample reward lying in wait in the Hereafter for those who endure these trials with patience. The sickness may either pass or, if a life-threatening one, result in death. No matter what the outcome, Allah will not let a patient and reliant believer go empty-handed. The following are seven duas for good health in light of the Quran and Sunnah.

Dua #1: Allah is the Sole Healer
Ayesha (R.A) reported that when any of us fell sick, the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) would wipe him with his right hand then say:
“Adhhib il-ba’s, Rabbi l-naas washfi anta al-Shaafi laa shifaa’a illa shifaa’uka shifaa’an laa yughaadir saqaman.”
(Remove the harm, O Lord of mankind and heal him, for You are the Healer and there is no healing except Your healing, with a cure which does not leave any disease behind.) (Sahih al-Bukhari 5675)
Dua #2: Recite ‘Bismillah’ and a Supplication ‘Dua’
Uthmaan ibn Abi’l-’Aas al-Thaqafi said that he complained to the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) about some pain that he had felt in his body since he became Muslim. The Prophet (PBUH instructed him:
“Put your hand on the part of your body that hurts and say: ‘Bismillah (in the name of Allah)’ three times, then say seven times: A’oodhu Billaahi wa qudratihi min sharri ma wa uhaadhir ‘I seek refuge in Allah and His Power from the evil of what I find and I fear.” (Sahih Muslim 2202)
Dua #3: Cure with Al Mu’awwidhatayn ‘Surah Falaq and Surah Naas’
Ayesha (R.A) also stated that if one of his family fell sick:
The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) would blow over him and recite al-Mu’awwidhatayn. (Surah Falaq and Surah Naas) When he himself fell ill with his final illness, I started to blow over him and wipe him with his own hand, because it was more blessed than my hand.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 5735)
Dua #4: Calling out to the ‘Lord of the good’
Abu Darda (R.A) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) say:
“Whoever among you suffers some sickness, or his brother suffers some sickness, let him say: ‘Our Lord Allah Who is in heaven, hallowed be Your name, Your will is done in heaven and on earth; as Your mercy is in heaven, bestow it upon the earth. Forgive us of our sins. You are the Lord of the good. Send down Your mercy and healing upon this pain’, and he will be healed.” (Sunan Abi Dawud 3892)
Dua #5: Beseech the ‘Lord of the Mighty Throne’
It was narrated from Ibn Abbas (R.A) that the Prophet (PBUH) said: “The one who visits a sick person who is not dying, and says seven times in his presence, ‘I ask Allah the Almighty, the Lord of the Mighty Throne, to heal you,’ Allah will heal him from that sickness.” (Sunan Abi Dawud 3106)
Dua #6: Surah al-Fatiha used as a ‘Ruqyah’ (Highly Recommended)
It was narrated from Abu Saeed al-Khudri (R.A) that the Prophet (PBUH) described Surat al-Fatiha as a ruqyah, and he approved of the Sahabi who recited it as a ruqyah for the one who had been stung by a scorpion. (Sahih al-Bukhari 2156).
Abu Sa’eed al-Khudri (R.A) reports that some companions of the Prophet (PBUH) came to one of the Arab tribes. They asked them for hospitality, but they refused to welcome them. While they were like that, the chief of that tribe was stung. They said’: ‘Do you have any remedy or someone who can recite ruqyah?’ They said: ‘You did not offer us hospitality, so we will not do anything until you give us something in return.’ Then they agreed upon a flock of sheep.
Then he started to recite the Essence of the Quran — i.e., Surat al-Fatiha — and he collected his saliva and spat at him (at the site of the injury), and he recovered. The sheep were brought, and they (the companions) said they would not take them until we ask the Prophet (PBUH). So they asked him, and he smiled and said: “How did you know that it is a ruqyah? Take them and give me a share of them.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 5404)
Dua #7: A Combination of Surahs Recommended for Ruqyah
It was narrated from Abu Sa’eed al-Khudri (R.A) that Jibreel (A.S) came to the Prophet (PBUH) and said: “O Muhammad, are you sick?” He said: “Yes.” He said: “In the name of Allah I perform ruqyah for you, from everything that is harming you, from the evil of every soul or envious eye may Allah heal you, in the name of Allah I perform ruqyah for you.” (Sahih Muslim 2186).
The Ruqyah may consist of reciting a combination of Surah al-Fatiha 7 times, the Mu’awidhatayn, and Ayat al-Kursi. Any Muslim who recites the Ruqyah blows on his hands and passes them over the affected area, and with full faith in Allah’s powers of healing, will undoubtedly get relief. Allah-Willing.
