Articles of Faith: Belief in the Holy Quran
Article of Faith: Belief in Books
There are six articles of faith in Islam. Muslim Holy Book must believe in all of them in order to have the correct belief system. Denying any one of the articles isn’t permissible. Belief in divinely revealed books is the third article of faith. Therefore, a true Muslim must unequivocally believe in all of Allah’s revealed books. This includes the books that He has specified in the Quran. Allah says in Surah al-Baqarah that we should believe in the Quran and the earlier revelations to be among the rightly guided ones.
Allah, in the Quran, defines four main revealed books. He revealed all these books as His uncreated word. However, over time, the books were lost or corrupted by external influences. The four books that we must recognize since Allah mentioned them are: Zabur (Psalms) sent to Dawud (AS), Torah (Bible) sent to Musa (AS), Injeel (Gospel) sent to Isa (AS), and, of course, the Quran sent to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). However, the Quran is the only one of these books that still exists in its original form without any alterations or corruption.
Zabur
This was the holy book revealed to Dawud (AS), who is also known as David. More commonly, in the English-speaking world, this book is known as the Psalms. Allah did not provide too many details about it in the Quran, but He stated that in its original form, it was one of His revelations. However, we cannot consider any possible version of this if it exists to be the original revelation. It could either have been part of the original revelation, or it may not have any of it. We should only affirm its original revelation.
Tawrat
The Tawrat, more commonly known as the Torah, is the holy book Allah revealed to Prophet Moses/Musa (AS). This scripture contained Allah’s message for mankind, to worship Him alone. Musa (AS) and Harun (AS), who were the messengers at this time, utilized this revelation to urge the people of Israel (Bani Israel, Israelites) to worship Allah. Allah said that the Torah contained guidance and light for mankind.
There are many versions of this holy book in existence nowadays. However, people have wholly corrupted it, and therefore, it is not in its original form anymore. It may have some truth in it, but as Muslims, we neither confirm nor deny any specific part of it. We leave it to Allah, who knows best.
Injeel
The Injeel, also known as the Gospel, was the holy book Allah gave to Prophet Isa (Jesus) AS. He was a prophet born miraculously through Allah’s command despite his mother, Mary, having never touched a man. Isa (AS) also delivered the message of this holy book to the children of Israel. Allah says in the Quran that He sent the Injeel to Isa (AS), which contained guidance and confirmed the Tawrat that came earlier.
As with the other revealed books besides the Quran, eventually, the original version of the Injeel was lost. People modified it and changed their meanings. Thus, we should only believe in its original revelation and not confirm or deny it in any current scripture.
Quran
The Quran is the last and final revelation of Allah. It is the only Islam Holy book that Muslims can unequivocally believe in nowadays. Allah promised to protect the book from any kind of corruption, and that has ensured that the book is in its original form today as it was 1400+ years ago. It is a book for all of mankind, and for all of the time.
